St Kevin's Church (also known as St Kevin's Kitchen for its distinctive chimney-like belfry) sits at the heart of the early-medieval monastic city of Glendalough, founded by St Kevin in the 6th century. The stone church dates from the 11th or 12th century and is one of the few intact roofed buildings of its era in Ireland. Above the gable, the Milky Way passes through the constellation Cygnus, with the Sadr region and the North America Nebula glowing in hydrogen-alpha. The bright stars of the Northern Cross - Deneb, Sadr, and Albireo sit directly above the church, an alignment that feels appropriate for one of Ireland's most important early Christian sites.
